The 57th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council commenced today in Geneva, Switzerland. Running from September 9 to October 11, 2024, the session will feature thirty interactive dialogues, two enhanced interactive dialogues, and six panel discussions focusing on critical human rights issues.
The Council will review fifty country situation reports and over eighty thematic reports during the session, serving as a crucial platform for international cooperation and dialogue on global human rights challenges.
The Maldives delegation, led by Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Salma Rasheed, will actively participate in the session. The delegation includes Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Maryam Fathika Fayaz, Third Secretary Aminath Shadha, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations Offices at Geneva.
Key highlights of the Maldives' participation include delivering national statements on various agenda items, including a joint statement on climate change on behalf of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This statement will address the impact of climate change on human rights. The session will also feature a presentation of the country report from the Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, following a visit to the Maldives in March 2024.
As a member of both the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Maldives will also express concerns about global human rights violations, including the humanitarian crisis in Palestine and the situation in Myanmar.
The UN Human Rights Council, comprised of 47 Member States, is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights globally and addressing human rights violations. The Maldives is currently serving a term on the Council, which will end in 2025.
