The Maldivian government’s Operation Kurangi has collected biometric data of 18,919 foreigners across 194 Islands as part of a three-year initiative to ensure 100 percent biometric identification of foreign workers. Launched on May 2 in Himmafushi, the operation is being conducted in three phases.

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology reported that data collection in 50 villages has been completed, while work continues in the remaining areas. The first year of the operation focuses on registering illegal immigrants within the Ministry's system. Once fully implemented, the system will track detailed information about foreigners in the country, including their nationalities and places of work.

The subsequent two years will target the deportation of undocumented immigrants who cannot be incorporated into the system. The operation is expected to provide the first official estimate of the number of illegal immigrants in Maldives, a figure that has eluded previous administrations.

During this year's Labor Day celebrations, President Mohamed Muizzu reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing illegal immigration. He emphasized that foreigners involved in criminal activities will be deported within 48 hours.

Operation Kurangi underscores Maldives’ efforts to streamline its immigration processes and enhance national security by monitoring foreign workers and undocumented immigrants within its borders.
