Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed announced today that new rules for subsidies on electricity and sugarcane will be unveiled within the next month.
In response to an inquiry from Ras Online during today's press conference, Heena emphasized that the government’s goal is not to reduce subsidies but to reform the system to better target those in need.
Heena acknowledged that the current subsidy framework in the Maldives inadvertently benefits higher-income groups as well. To address this, the government is working on a revised system designed to prioritize subsidies for the most deserving beneficiaries.
"The relevant administrative and research work is currently underway," Heena stated. "We will share the updated information with all parties as soon as the new rules are finalized, which we anticipate will be within the next month."
She also mentioned that existing subsidy programs, including Aasandha and various other subsidies, will be adjusted to better serve those who require assistance. The adjustments are part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's broader efforts to enhance the effectiveness and fairness of the country’s subsidy policies.
