The Judiciary Committee of Parliament has approved the appointment of former High Court Judge Abbas Shareef as the new Prosecutor General. Of the six candidates considered for the position, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted only Abbas Shareef’s name to Parliament.
During a session today, Abbas was interviewed by the Judiciary Committee, where he received a commendable 93.91 percent approval rating. The committee members unanimously endorsed his appointment.
A special extraordinary session of Parliament has been scheduled for tomorrow to officially confirm Abbas as Prosecutor General. The appointment will be finalized once the House approves his nomination. President Muizzu is expected to support the decision.
Abbas Shareef holds a law degree from the University of Tasmania and served as a High Court judge from 2011 until his retirement. His appointment follows the vacancy created by the impeachment of the previous Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem, on August 22.
