Since the new year, Maldives records show that 18,086 tourists have arrived in the Maldives in the first six days of the year 2021.

Statistics of the Ministry of Tourism have shown that during the first six days of the year, 3,014 tourists arrived daily on average. Statistics also show that 18,086 tourists arrived in the Maldives in the initial six days of the year 2021, while last year, 31,702 tourists arrived in the Maldives in the initial six days.

As per the Tourism Ministry, in 2021, the top source market for tourist arrival in the first six days of the year was Russia with 5,331 arrivals, followed by India with 1,816 tourist arrivals. Ukraine stood third with 1,779 tourist arrivals. Other top source markets include Kazakhstan, Romania, Germany, France, U.S.A, and Uzbekistan.

The records also show that currently, 26 International flights are in operation to the Maldives, and a total of 557 tourist facilities are in operation.

Along with reported coronavirus cases, Maldives announced a state of public health emergency on March 12 last year, the first such declaration under a recent public health protection law. Following this, the Maldives closed its borders on March 27, 2020.

The Maldives reopened its borders on July 15, 2020. Since then, resorts and hotels on uninhabited islands and liveaboard vessels were allowed to host tourists. Since the opening, the Maldives has seen an increase in tourist arrivals from day-to-day.

Since the border reopened last year, from July 15 till December 30, a total of 169,964 tourists arrived in the Maldives. The Maldives reached the milestone of 500,000th tourist arrival for the year 2020 on December 17, and the Maldives recorded a total of 555,399 tourist arrivals for the year 2020.
