Onion prices in the Maldives are set to decrease starting next week, according to Presidential Spokesperson Heena Waleed.

The cost of onions has surged recently due to supply shortages, with current prices exceeding MVR 50 per kilogram and a sack of onions reaching over MVR 900.

Speaking at a press conference at the Presidents Office today, Heena acknowledged the high prices in the market but assured that relief is on the way. The rise in onion prices has been attributed to reduced imports, which were affected by decreased exports from India.

Heena confirmed that efforts are underway to address the issue, with plans to import additional onions through the State Trading Organization (STO) by next Saturday or Tuesday.
