The Parliament has confirmed the appointment of former High Court Judge Abbas Shareef as the new Prosecutor General.
The decision follows a series of meetings and sessions to fill the vacant position, which arose after the impeachment of the previous Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem, on August 22.
Abbas Shareef, who holds a law degree from the University of Tasmania and served as a High Court judge from 2011 to 2024, was the sole candidate nominated for the role. President Mohammed submitted only Abbas' name for consideration.
An extraordinary session of Parliament, along with a meeting of the Judiciary Committee held yesterday, reviewed and endorsed the appointment in accordance with the president's proposal. Today, the House of Representatives convened another extraordinary session to finalize the appointment.
The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, with Abbas Shareef receiving 85 votes and no members voting against him.
