Senior Deputy Leader of the PNC Parliamentary Group, Ibrahim Shujau, stated today that if the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had not been removed from power, the people of the Maldives would still be relying on inadequate resources.

Shujau made these comments in a post on "X," coinciding with the 10-month celebration of President Muizzu’s government.

Shujau emphasized the challenges faced by the current administration, noting that President Muizzu had to rebuild a nation that had suffered from mismanagement during the previous government. He pointed out that various issues are being addressed by the current government, highlighting the need for reconstruction and recovery.

In his remarks, Shujau criticized the MDP for its handling of employment during its tenure. He referenced a statement from the MDP condemning recent layoffs, arguing that the party had previously hired a large number of employees without a sustainable plan for their salaries. He asserted that this led to significant harm for those employees when contracts were not renewed.

Additionally, Shujau accused the MDP government of failing to support local fishermen. He claimed that the MDP bought fish at high prices without ensuring timely payments, ultimately leaving fishermen in distress. He praised the current government's efforts to revitalize the fishing industry, including the renovation of factories and improvement of ice plants.

President Muizzu won the presidency in the September 2023 election, defeating then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the MDP candidate. Muizzu secured 54.04 percent of the vote, while Solih received 45.96 percent, marking a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape.
