Left-leaning Anura Kumara Dissanayake is leading the election race after securing 49% of the 6 million votes counted so far, according to Sri Lanka Elections Commission data as of 12:31 pm on Sunday. Opposition party leader Sajith Premadasa follows with 29.88% of the vote. Meanwhile, incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe trails behind with only 16%, having garnered 235,000 votes.
Sri Lankans went to the polls on Saturday to elect the nation’s 10th president, marking the first election since the devastating 2022 economic crisis that led to a loan default.
