President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed the Maldives' desire to play a more prominent role in the United Nations during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York today. This meeting took place as part of President Muizzu's participation in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

At the meeting, President Muizzu emphasized the Maldives' commitment to taking a more active role in the UN system, particularly regarding key issues affecting Small Island Developing States (SIDS). He briefed the Secretary-General on the fiscal challenges currently facing the Maldives, noting that the government is working on a fiscal reform agenda aimed at achieving sustainable debt and budgetary conditions. The President stressed the importance of support from both bilateral and multilateral partners in this effort.

Secretary-General Guterres commended the Maldives for its initiatives in addressing global challenges, particularly in climate change adaptation. He expressed his full commitment to supporting the Maldives in its adaptation efforts and tackling other pressing challenges the nation faces.



The President concluded the meeting by thanking the Secretary-General and expressing appreciation for the UN's efforts to provide opportunities for all member nations to address global concerns under his leadership.
