In a significant move, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that the Maldives has filed a declaration of intervention regarding the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip, specifically in the case of South Africa vs. Israel. This action is taken under Article 63 of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Statute.

In a post on X, President Muizzu emphasized the urgency of holding Israel accountable for its alleged unlawful actions in Gaza. He asserted, “The rule of law must be upheld, and Israel must cease its genocidal acts against the Palestinian people.”

The President reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to humanitarian principles, stating, “We will always side with humanity, peace, and justice, and in doing so, we will continue to stand with the Palestinian people.” He called for the recognition of Palestine, advocating for its establishment based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This declaration reflects the Maldives' long-standing support for Palestinian rights and its call for international action to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region. The intervention at the ICJ marks a pivotal moment in the Maldives' foreign policy stance, emphasizing its dedication to justice and accountability on the global stage.
