In a significant milestone for the Maldives' maritime sector, the first vessel under the newly launched Northern Maritime Service (UMS) docked at Ihavandhippolhu today. The Panama-registered oil tanker, Jian Jie, en route from Abu Dhabi, UAE, to China, became the first ship to benefit from the array of services introduced by UMS.
The vessel docked early this morning to access services such as crew change, water supply, waste disposal, and spare parts. The ship, with a crew of 9, is expected to remain in Ihavandhippolhu for around five days to undergo maintenance work. Several private companies, along with the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), will provide these essential services.
In conjunction with the docking, the crew members of Jian Jie were invited to attend the opening ceremony of the Seaman's Rest Area in Uligam, where they received a warm welcome from the local community. Drumming activities and a large turnout of Uligam residents marked the occasion, with MPL CEO Mohammed Vajeeh Ibrahim, Horaphoshi Constituency MP Ali Musa, and Uligam Council President Ahmed Muaz Mohammed in attendance.
The newly inaugurated Seaman's Rest Area is a dedicated space where crew members of vessels entering through the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) gate set up by MPL can rest, relax, and participate in sports during their stay in Uligam.
The captain of Jian Jie, who has sailed for over 20 years, praised the hospitality shown by the Uligam community. "I've worked in this field for twenty years. But nowhere have I ever visited, experienced such perfect hospitality," he said during the ceremony.
MPL CEO Mohammed Wajeeh expressed optimism about the impact of the UMS services, noting that the vessel's stay in Ihavandhippolhu would create additional business opportunities for the local community.
The Northern Maritime Services were launched by the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as part of a broader effort to boost the country’s economy by capitalizing on its strategic location and enhancing services in the maritime sector.
