The Democrats party of the Maldives has expressed concern over the government's failure to uphold its promises regarding the Chagos Islands issue, criticizing the current and previous administrations for their handling of the matter.

In a press release today, the Democrats condemned the previous government for changing its long-standing policy on Chagos sovereignty and accused the current government of inaction. They condemned the last government's shift in its stance on the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands and criticized the current government's failure to take action so far.

The Democrats also referenced a secret letter from the government during President Solih's administration, in which the Maldives' advocacy on the Chagos issue was revealed. The party had previously condemned the vote related to this matter.

The statement further criticized the UK’s decision to grant sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius without any decisive action from the current administration under President Mohamed Muizzu, who had promised to review the decisions made by his predecessor.

The British government announced on Thursday its decision to grant Mauritius sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, an issue the Maldives had previously stated it was working on resolving.
