President His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during his official state visit to India, delivered a press statement today at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, highlighting India’s critical role in the socioeconomic and infrastructure development of the Maldives.
Addressing the media after official talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Dr. Muizzu expressed his profound gratitude for India's unwavering support, particularly during challenging periods. He specifically praised India’s financial contributions, including the rollover of Treasury Bills (T-Bills) and additional support of INR 30 billion, along with $400 million under a bilateral currency swap agreement.
In his speech, President Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors. “India is not only a key partner in our growth but also an integral part of our journey towards progress and prosperity,” he said, noting India's pivotal role in boosting the Maldivian economy.
He also expressed optimism about concluding the ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, which he stated would unlock significant economic opportunities between the two nations. “We look forward to harnessing the full economic potential between our countries and welcoming increased Indian investments in both the tourism and development sectors,” President Dr. Muizzu added.
India remains one of the largest markets for tourism to the Maldives, and President Muizzu expressed hope for continued growth in this area, aiming to attract even more Indian tourists.
The leaders also discussed a joint document titled "A Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership," a roadmap for future bilateral cooperation covering trade, energy, health, digital transformation, maritime security, and more. This vision document underscores the strong relationship between the two countries.
With the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives approaching next year, President Muizzu extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit the Maldives for the celebrations.
President Dr. Muizzu is on a five-day state visit to India, accompanied by First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level Maldivian delegation, marking his first official trip to India since assuming office.
