President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed returned to the Maldives this afternoon, concluding a landmark five-day state visit to India from 6 to 10 October 2024.
This visit marked President Dr. Muizzu's first state visit since taking office in November 2023, made at the invitation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu.
During the visit, President Dr. Muizzu engaged in high-level discussions with President Murmu, Prime Minister His Excellency Narendra Modi, and other senior Indian officials, focusing on strengthening the bilateral friendship and development partnership between the two nations.
One of the key outcomes was the adoption of "A Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership," a framework that will guide future cooperation in various sectors. Virtual inaugurations and agreement exchanges further solidified this partnership.
In his meetings with Prime Minister Modi, President Dr. Muizzu explored new avenues of collaboration in social housing, infrastructure development, trade and investment, healthcare, and renewable energy. He expressed gratitude for India's financial assistance, including a recent rollover of T-bills and additional support of INR 30 billion to $400 million under a currency swap agreement.
The President also participated in business forums in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, where he highlighted the Maldives' potential for tourism ventures, including special economic zones, eco-friendly resorts, and luxury private islands. In Mumbai, the President and First Lady attended a Maldives-India Tourism Networking Evening, fostering tourism investment opportunities between both nations.
Cultural and community engagements were also part of the trip, with President Dr. Muizzu and the First Lady visiting the historic Taj Mahal in Agra, and the First Lady touring her alma mater, St. Joseph's University in Bangalore. The President met with Maldivian communities in New Delhi and Bangalore, addressing their concerns and reaffirming his administration’s support for citizens abroad.
As the Maldives and India approach the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, President Dr. Muizzu extended invitations to President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi to visit the Maldives.
