A total of MVR 8.7 million was collected as Zakat al-Mal (property zakat) in the Maldives last month, according to figures released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). This reflects a substantial increase compared to the MVR 2.9 million collected during the same period last year.
Zakat al-Mal is an obligatory form of charity based on wealth and assets, aimed at supporting the poor and needy. Up to September this year, MIRA has collected a total of MVR 82.6 million in Zakat al-Mal.
Last month, MVR 4,000 per person was distributed to individuals listed in the national register of poor and needy, as part of the government's effort to provide financial assistance using zakat funds.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs recently introduced changes to the rate of Zakat al-Mal, although the updated rate has not yet been disclosed.
