A 33-year-old man, Yoosuf Shaaheen of Enbumaage L. Dhanbidhoo, has been remanded in custody for smuggling two kilograms of drugs from Bangkok, with an estimated street value of MVR 3.3 million.

Customs officials reported that the individual arrived in the Maldives on Saturday.

Shaaheen was found to be carrying 1.86 kilograms of mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant. The drugs were discovered during a thorough search of his luggage conducted by customs officers.

The Criminal Court issued a remand order yesterday, requiring Shaheen to remain in custody for 15 days. The case highlights ongoing efforts by Maldivian authorities to combat drug trafficking and prevent the influx of illegal substances into the country.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to uncover further details related to the smuggling operation.
