Prominent businessman Champa Mohamed Moosa, commonly known as Uchchu, has called for a significant extension of presidential terms in the Maldives, suggesting that each president should be given 20 to 25 years to govern.
Moosa, the Chairman of Champa Brothers and a key figure in the Maldivian tourism industry made the statement during an interview with Raajje TV.
Uchchu expressed his belief that a five-year term is insufficient for presidents to fulfill their promises to the public. He argued that the current short terms hinder progress, as presidents often need more time and resources to accomplish their goals.
Every president comes to power with a lot of promises, but not all of them can be fulfilled in just five years, said Uchchu. He further explained that to secure a second term, presidents have to spend significant amounts of money and make additional promises, which adds pressure and detracts from the original commitments.
Uchchu's comments highlight a broader debate on governance and continuity in leadership. Under the current Constitution, a president in the Maldives serves a five-year term and can be re-elected for one consecutive term, capping the total at 10 years in office.
