Homeland Security and Technology Minister Ali Ihusaan has announced that the government plans to complete the biometric data collection of foreigners in the Maldives before April next year.
Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office today, Minister Ihusaan provided updates on the ongoing biometric data collection initiative. The operation, which began in April of last year, has already been conducted in 82 islands, with biometric data collected from 6,891 foreign nationals. This includes fingerprinting and other relevant data under the program.
Ihusaan outlined that the first phase of the project is expected to be completed by January 2024, ahead of the target deadline in April.
He made these remarks during the launch of Operation Karangi, a nationwide initiative spanning three years. The operation, which is being carried out in three phases, aims to regulate undocumented immigrants and ensure their proper registration or deportation if they cannot be brought into the system.
The Minister also noted the success of Operation Karangi in identifying and managing undocumented immigrants, highlighting that no previous government had fully ascertained the number of illegal immigrants in the country.
