On the occasion of United Nations Day 2024, former President of the United Nations General Assembly and former Foreign Minister of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, reaffirmed the Maldives' enduring commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations.
In a message shared today, Shahid reflected on the significance of the United Nations, describing it as a "bastion of hope" and a platform for dialogue to address global challenges. He emphasized that the challenges facing the world today – including environmental degradation, poverty, and conflict – highlight the continued relevance of the United Nations as a forum for global cooperation and solidarity.
"The Maldives has always been a proud believer in multilateralism, and the United Nations," Shahid stated, recalling that joining the United Nations was the first foreign policy decision made by the Maldives after gaining independence in 1965. He added that the Maldives has consistently upheld the values of the United Nations, proving that even small states can contribute to global peace and progress.
Shahid urged the international community to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, especially as the world approaches eight decades since its signing. He underscored the importance of championing multilateralism, dialogue, and unity in addressing current global issues.
Reflecting on his career and involvement with the United Nations, Shahid noted the UN's enduring relevance despite its flaws. "It is now up to us, Governments and people around the world, to uphold and champion the values and the hope that brought us together, seventy-nine years ago," he concluded.
The United Nations Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter on October 24, 1945. The Maldives became a member of the United Nations in 1965, shortly after gaining independence.
