Maldives Supreme Court Justice Aisha Shujune Muhammad has been re-elected to the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture and Other Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) for a fourth term. The elections took place in Geneva, with Justice Shujune securing the highest number of votes.

Justice Shujune, who has served in this role since 2010, will now continue her work for the 2025 to 2028 term. She previously served two consecutive terms from 2011 to 2018 and held key positions, including Rapporteur and Vice-Chair of Jurisprudence, during that time. Most recently, she completed the 2021 to 2024 term.

Emerging as one of the top candidates in a competitive election with 14 contenders for 12 seats, Justice Shujune's re-election highlights her significant contributions to the global fight against torture and her extensive experience in human rights and judicial reform.

This year, the Maldives marks 19 years since joining the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT), becoming the first Asian country to do so and one of the original twenty State parties.

The UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture is the largest human rights treaty body within the UN system, consisting of 25 independent experts who work to prevent torture worldwide.
