Maldives’ Vice President, His Excellency Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, extended a formal invitation to King Charles III to visit the Maldives during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 in Samoa. The Vice President’s invitation was made in a meeting with King Charles, who is the head of the Commonwealth, as part of a high-level summit aimed at strengthening international cooperation among member nations.
In a post on X, the Vice President shared news of the invitation, expressing hope that King Charles’ visit would further strengthen ties between the UK and Maldives. He also extended an invitation to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives, highlighting a commitment to fostering regional unity.
For the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 in Samoa, Vice President Latheef was accompanied by a senior delegation, including His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs; His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Rafiu, Minister of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation; and Her Excellency Dr. Iruthisham Adam, Maldives’ High Commissioner to the UK. The delegation engaged in crucial discussions on global issues impacting the Maldives and the wider Commonwealth community. The Vice President delivered statements at several key events, including the CHOGM Climate Breakfast on climate finance targets, the Commonwealth Business Forum’s Island Leaders Round Table, and the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) CEO-Leader’s Event.
During his visit, Vice President Latheef also held a courtesy meeting with Samoa’s Prime Minister, Hon. Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa, host of CHOGM 2024. He participated in executive sessions and the Heads of Government Retreat, presenting interventions aligned with Maldives’ interests in climate action, economic resilience, and sustainable development. This CHOGM is the first attended by a Maldives delegation under President His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, which began in November 2023.
The Commonwealth summit, held every two years, offers a forum for leaders to address pressing global challenges, from economic issues to environmental and security concerns. This year’s meeting underscored the importance of collaboration among Commonwealth countries in building resilience, enhancing trade, and promoting a sustainable future.
