The Construction Minister, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, has stated that the delay in the construction of the Thilamale' Bridge is unacceptable, and the deadline for completion will not be extended.
Minister Muththalib briefed the press at the Presidential Office today on the latest developments regarding the Thilamale' Bridge project. He reported that 43.5 percent of the precast segment, 79.5 percent of the pillars, 67.8 percent of the pile cap, and 62.2 percent of the pier complex have been completed, with a total of 45.82 percent of the entire project finished.
While the minister acknowledged that the bridge works are not significantly delayed, he noted that some aspects are progressing slowly, particularly deep piling. He emphasized that the contractor should not cite high tides as a reason for delays.
"We have communicated to the contractor that the sea conditions should not be viewed as an opportunity to postpone work," the minister stated.
The contractor has claimed that certain delays in the bridge construction are due to bad sea conditions, but Minister Muththalib reiterated that no further deadlines will be granted, as stipulated in the contract.
Additionally, he mentioned that the government is collaborating with the Indian government and the contractor, AFCONs, to address any ongoing delays. However, the expected completion date for the Thilamale' Bridge remains set for September 2026.
