Former Vice President of the Parliament Moosa Manik (Reeko) has criticized recent changes to the insurance system.
The decision, made on October 31, now mandates that individuals with private insurance must cover the remaining portion of their medical costs after deductions.
Reeko expressed concern that this sudden change could burden private healthcare providers, who may need to bear the costs of updating their software systems to accommodate the new regulations.
“Even if you have insurance, an ordinary employee, after spending what they earn from their salary, their may not have enough money to pay for medical treatment. Therefore, before they can go to the insurance office with the bill, they first have to beg for money to pay the hospital, right?” Reeko stated, questioning the practical purpose of insurance under these circumstances.
In response to the backlash, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) later assured that the Aasandha scheme would assist in alleviating the difficulties caused by the decision to modify private insurance coverage.
