Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath has confirmed the arrest of six suspects, including a Maldivian national, in connection with recent security threats to tourists in Arugam Bay. The arrests were made following intelligence reports on potential attacks in the popular tourist area, as well as suspicious incidents involving the photographing of major financial sites in Colombo.

Minister Herath stated that the arrests, which included five Sri Lankans and one Maldivian, were based on credible intelligence gathered regarding the suspected threats. However, he cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the suspects’ intentions or any specific plans.

"At this stage, we cannot definitively state what kind of plan or attempt this was, as the information from the six arrested individuals remains inconclusive," Herath remarked, urging the public to avoid spreading unverified information or misinterpretations regarding the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate, aiming to ensure the safety of tourists and residents while maintaining stability in tourist areas like Arugam Bay. Further updates are expected as investigations proceed.
