Former President Uz Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (G.O.D.R.G) called for unwavering national unity during his address at this evening’s Victory Day ceremony, emphasizing that such unity must not be compromised regardless of political or social changes in the Maldives.
“Despite the changes in our national landscape brought by global shifts, the evolution of our laws over time, and the operation of political parties, none of these should ever diminish our national unity,” he declared, underscoring the importance of solidarity in the face of ongoing transformations.
Reflecting on Victory Day, Gayoom highlighted that national principles should always come before political considerations. He recalled how Victory Day demonstrated Maldivians’ steadfast willingness to sacrifice for the nation’s dignity and honor, describing the fallen soldiers as heroes who gave their lives defending the country’s independence, sovereignty, and honor. He further noted that the victory achieved was a divine blessing from Allah, encouraging people to strengthen their faith for their own safety and protection.
The former President also expressed deep gratitude to friendly nations and international organizations that supported the Maldives during the crisis, particularly on Victory Day, and continue to uphold Maldivian sovereignty.
He cautioned about potential threats, pointing to shifting global political currents that could unexpectedly endanger the Maldives, and urged Maldivians to remain vigilant. Praising President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policies, he noted that they are key to preserving the Maldives' independence and sovereignty.
In closing, Gayoom emphasized the Maldives' historical role as a spiritual beacon for the Islamic Ummah, especially since embracing Islam, and urged continued support for Palestine. He called upon Maldivians to maintain their unwavering condemnation of Israel's actions in Gaza and stand firmly with the Palestinian cause.
