President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated a new fuel farm and hydrant system at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Thursday evening, marking a significant enhancement to the airport’s fueling capacity and efficiency.

With the launch of the new fuel farm, VIA’s storage capacity has surged from 13.5 million liters to 45 million liters, tripling its fuel reserves. Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) completed the project with financial support from China’s Exim Bank.

The project also introduced an 8.4-kilometer underground fuel hydrant system, replacing the need for mobile refuels. This underground infrastructure enhances fueling efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability, supporting increased demand and facilitating long-haul flights. Designed and constructed to meet international standards, this modernized system aligns with President Muizzu's vision in the airport masterplan, aiming to future-proof VIA’s operations.

After the inauguration, President Muizzu toured the new facilities at the airport. Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef and senior government officials joined him at the ceremony.
