Former Prosecutor General Uz Muhthaz Muhsin has expressed concern over recent news articles published by some online outlets in defense of vaping and tobacco products.

Muhthaz shared his views amid recent government action to amend the Export Import Act, which includes increasing duties on tobacco products and banning vape and related devices. Notably, he highlighted an article from Maldivian media that linked these measures to political motives, urging the public and media to avoid politicizing tobacco issues.

Muhthaz reminded journalists of their social responsibility, especially regarding public health matters. He emphasized, “It is a matter of great concern that news is being published in defense of vape and tobacco, which experts say is leading to the destruction of a generation.”

These remarks follow President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s approval of the 19th Amendment to the Export Import Act. Under this Act, the government has banned imports of several items, including tobacco products, tobacco substitutes, electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products, and their components.

The government has indicated that regulations accompanying these amendments will be outlined and published in the Maldives Gazette by the end of this month.
