President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has asserted that political parties making baseless claims for political gain must be accountable for their actions.
President Muizzu’s remarks came in response to opposition criticisms that the government’s development plans exclude the northernmost and southernmost regions from designated urban centers.
President Muizzu clarified that the government’s policy includes the development of a Northern Integrated Development Zone, covering the three northernmost atolls, and a Southern Integrated Development Zone, encompassing the four southernmost atolls. Additionally, he explained that seven urban centers will be developed across the nation, with three located in the north and four in the south.
He emphasized that the 20-year development masterplan will be crafted with input from residents, professionals, councils, and all relevant stakeholders. He criticized those who distort facts about the urban center project for political advantage.
"Those who speak without understanding or acknowledging the truth will bear responsibility for the impact of their words and actions," he stated.
Today, the Ministry of Housing confirmed that the planned urban centers will be established in R. Ungoofaaru, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, Adh. Mahibadhoo, F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and L. Fonadhoo. The opposition has expressed concern over excluding other regions and called on the government for further explanation.
