The Election Commission (EC) has announced that the register of political parties will be made public next week to allow for complaints and verification.
EC Member Hassan Zakaria shared the update with the media, stating that the decision follows rising public concerns regarding the authenticity of party membership registration. Zakaria admitted that the commission lacks the means to independently verify fingerprints and mobile numbers submitted on membership forms.
He urged the public to review the register and file complaints if any discrepancies are found.
As part of its response, the EC has also suspended the Simadha portal, previously used for registering political party members.
This announcement comes amid allegations from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) that individuals were fraudulently added to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC). The MDP has filed cases with the police and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), accusing the PNC of criminal offenses involving invalid membership forms.
The PNC, however, has denied the allegations.
