President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has expressed support for the Prosecutor General's Office's decision to cancel agreements that provided concessions to key individuals and entities implicated in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
The Prosecutor General's Office announced the termination of cooperation agreements with former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and SOF Pvt Ltd, a company that reportedly received significant funds from the fraudulent sale of island leases through MMPRC. This decision follows the 2022 cancellation of a similar agreement with former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath.
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the agreements were revoked because the suspects did not cooperate in assisting the investigation or facilitating the recovery of stolen funds.
In a statement on Facebook, President Muizzu welcomed the move and emphasized the need for equality before the law. "The only way to eradicate corruption is to ensure that all individuals accused of involvement in such cases are held accountable under the law," the President said.
The largest MMPRC corruption scandal in Maldivian history involved embezzling millions of dollars in state funds through fraudulent leasing of islands and lagoons. The recent decision underscores the government’s commitment to pursuing justice and recovering stolen public funds.
