Former MP Imthiyaz Fahmy has been appointed as the president of The Democrats following the resignation of former party president Hassan Latheef.
Fahumy was the sole candidate for the position. Instead of holding a general election as outlined in the party's constitution, the party's National Assembly decided to elect him during a meeting held Sunday night. The election committee approved the decision, declaring Fahumy the new president without a general vote among party members.
The party’s constitution mandates that the president be elected by voting among ordinary members. However, the National Assembly’s decision to bypass this process has sparked criticism from some members who voiced their concerns during the meeting.
In addition to Fahumy's appointment, the National Assembly also announced former Inguraidhoo MP Mohamed Waheed as the new male vice-president of the party. Similar to Fahumy, Waheed was the only candidate for the post, and he was declared elected without a general vote.
