Environment and Tourism Minister Thorig Ibrahim has emphasized the importance of conducting tourism activities in an environmentally friendly manner, highlighting the role of sustainability in maintaining the Maldives' appeal as a top travel destination.

During a program broadcast on PSM, Thorig stressed that tourist facilities should adopt measures such as safe waste management, renewable energy targets, and improved rural sanitation. He highlighted the increasing costs of electricity and water production in rural areas, pointing out the need for reducing waste and implementing resource-efficient practices.

He also noted that tourists are increasingly inclined to visit destinations that uphold sustainable practices, indicating that environmental responsibility is becoming a significant factor in travel decisions.

The minister’s remarks come as the Maldives continues efforts to promote responsible tourism and address environmental challenges to safeguard its fragile ecosystem.
