Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has stated that strict action will be taken against those who violate regulations concerning Umrah travel services.
In a post on X, the minister addressed the growing concerns regarding Askoi Hajj Group, which has been accused of collecting payments from individuals without facilitating their travel for Umrah. He confirmed that the matter is now under investigation by the relevant ministry unit and assured that necessary actions would be taken. He also noted that permits of certain groups had recently been revoked for similar violations.
The investigation into Askoi Hajj Group follows complaints on social media that the group had canceled planned trips despite receiving payments. Reports indicate that six individuals who had paid for Umrah, expecting to travel during the last 15 days of Ramadan and the first six days of Shawwal, were informed at the last minute that they would not be able to go.
Each person had reportedly paid MVR 42,000, amounting to a total of MVR 252,000. Some of the affected individuals have since secured alternative Umrah arrangements through other groups and are now demanding refunds from Askoi Hajj Group.
