MDP Parliamentary Group Leader and MP for South Hithadhoo, Ibrahim Nazil, has stated that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) opposes the proposed closure of Parliament during Ramadan.

Nazil's remarks come in response to a proposed amendment to the Parliament's rules of procedure, submitted by ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP for South Maafannu, Abdulla Rifau. The General Committee of Parliament convened on Thursday to deliberate on the matter.

Speaking at the meeting, Nazil questioned the need to suspend parliamentary sittings during Ramadan, pointing out that government employees and private sector workers continue their duties during the holy month.

"There is no reason to close Parliament," he said, reiterating MDP’s opposition to the move.

Nazil further emphasized that the MDP will not support the General Committee’s decision if it moves forward with the proposal to suspend parliamentary sessions during Ramadan.
