Minister of Education Dr. Ismail Shafiu has emphasized the importance of high-performing students entering the teaching profession to improve the education system in the Maldives.
Speaking at the Higher Achievers Awards Ceremony held to honour top A-Level students, Minister Shafiu noted a pressing shortage of qualified teachers in key subject areas. He said over 600 specialist teachers and around 200 Dhivehi and Islam teachers are currently needed.
He highlighted that addressing this issue requires collective agreement and action from society. “To truly develop our education sector, we need capable students to become educators and actively participate in shaping national education policy,” he said.
Minister Shafiu also reiterated the government's commitment to reducing reliance on foreign teachers, stating that the goal is to strengthen the sector with qualified local educators.
