Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdullah has affirmed that he presides over parliamentary proceedings independently and without any obstacles.

The remarks came during Monday’s session after South Galolhu MP Meekail Naseem raised concerns over a government-backed bill seeking to reduce the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five. While the emergency motion was ultimately dropped, Meekail continued to voice strong opposition during the session.

Meekail accused the government of keeping Abdul Raheem in his position through coercion, a claim to which the Speaker responded firmly. He stated that Meekail was in no position to comment on his personal circumstances, including his health and living conditions.

Abdul Raheem reiterated that he was elected to the Speaker’s seat by the members of Parliament and that he faces no restrictions in carrying out his duties. He urged lawmakers not to use the parliamentary platform to mislead the public.

The relationship between Abdul Raheem and President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reportedly strained after the dismissal of Abdul Raheem’s son, Faisal Ibrahim, as Tourism Minister. However, Abdul Raheem has recently been seen at the People’s National Congress (PNC) office and has met with President Muizzu, signaling a possible reconciliation.
