Government coalition partners, including the leaders of the Jumhooree Party (JP), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), and Maldives National Party (MNP), abstained from voting on the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC)'s bill to remove two of the seven Supreme Court judges.

During today's parliamentary session, the bill was put to a vote, but none of the members from JP, MDA, or MNP were present. Among those absent were JP leader and Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim, MNP leader and North Maafannu MP Mohamed Nazim, MDA leader and Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, as well as Velidhoo MP Mohamed Abbas.

Additionally, PNC MP Ahmed Azaan also refrained from voting on the bill.

Despite the absence of its coalition partners, the PNC successfully passed the Courts Act Amendment Bill with 68 votes in favor. Nine opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MPs voted against it.

The coalition partners’ absence is notable, as the ruling PNC had not fielded candidates against Gasim, Nazim, and Siyam in the recent parliamentary elections.
