Former MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz has called on all political leaders to step forward to protect the country amid growing concerns over judicial independence.

His remarks come after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) suspended multiple Supreme Court judges and a bill was passed at the Parliament to reduce the number of justices on the bench.

In a post on X, Shifaz emphasized that the Constitution was not designed to allow one branch of government to overpower another. He, who previously served as Minister at the President's Office during the last government’s Supreme Court reshuffle, stressed the urgency for political leaders to take action.

He asserted that ensuring the country’s safety ultimately depends on direct action by the people. Shifaz, who recently returned to the MDP after a brief stint with The Democrats, reiterated that now is the time for all political leaders to come forward.
