A new bill proposing strict regulations and heavy fines for animal-related offenses has been introduced in Parliament.
The "Animal Keeping and Animal Protection Bill" was submitted by PNC MP Mohamed Abdul Rahman, aiming to establish sustainable and safe practices for keeping animal's, breeding, and trading as well.
The bill outlines regulations for breeding animals, operating pet shops, and keeping animals for scientific or educational purposes. It also sets guidelines for the euthanasia of animals and veterinary treatment systems.
Under the proposed law, violations could result in fines ranging from MVR 10,000 to MVR 100,000, depending on the size of the animal. Additionally, individuals who allow stray animals to roam freely could face fines between MVR 5,000 and MVR 50,000. The bill also includes penalties of MVR 10,000 to MVR 100,000 for possession of illegal animals.
The legislation seeks to improve animal welfare standards and ensure responsible pet ownership across the country.
