The ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) has accused former Supreme Court Judge Husnu Suood of displaying political activism both before and after his resignation from the bench.

In a press statement issued today, the PNC criticized the tendency of judges to engage in political discourse, arguing that such actions undermine the credibility of the judiciary and push the courts into political competition.

“Justice Suood’s resignation yesterday shows that he adhered to the same principles of political activism even while serving as a Supreme Court judge,” the statement read.

The PNC also pointed out that Suood submitted his resignation letter to the President’s Office instead of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), as required by law.

The party further stated that independent institutions, including the judiciary, have been granted full autonomy under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration. However, it emphasized that those in judicial positions must uphold the legal framework without influencing the judiciary politically.

Suood resigned after three Supreme Court judges were suspended following amendments to the Courts Act, which reduced the number of justices on the bench. He was also among the judges who ruled that MPs would lose their seats if they switched parties.
