Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has indicated that the government's taxi line service, soon to be launched by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), may be discontinued in the future if private taxi services reach the required service standards.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Ameen addressed concerns raised by taxi drivers who claim the initiative will harm their livelihoods. The new electric vehicle taxi line, expected to begin operations in July, is being introduced to address long-standing complaints from the public about unreliable taxi services.

The minister assured that the government is not attempting to dominate the taxi industry but is introducing an alternative option to ensure citizens have access to reliable transportation. He stated that if, over the next five to six years, the service quality of private taxis improves to match public demand, the government-run taxi line may no longer be necessary.

He further emphasized that the aim is to ensure transport services meet a certain standard, in line with what the public expects.
