President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Monday emphasized the importance of national pride and military preparedness during a speech marking the 133rd anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), vowing to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities in the face of evolving security challenges.

Speaking at the official ceremony held at Kalhuthuh’kalaa Koshi, the President urged Maldivians to take pride in the achievements of the armed forces and stand united in support of their development. He highlighted that patriotism is central to enhancing the military's operational strength and ensuring the nation’s sovereignty.

“The safety and security of the Maldives depend on elevating standards within the MNDF, equipping the forces with necessary resources, and prioritizing rigorous training,” President Muizzu said. “Only a nation bound by true love for its homeland can preserve its freedom.”

He criticized those who question the military’s progress, labelling such attitudes as unpatriotic and counterproductive, and called on citizens to reject negativity and instead foster national solidarity.

Reaffirming his commitment since assuming office on November 17, 2023, President Muizzu described the armed forces as key partners in safeguarding the Maldives’ independence. He stressed the strategic importance of the country's vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), which covers 99 percent of the national territory.

“The protection of our maritime territory is a critical priority,” he said, noting that the government’s recent initiatives to bolster national defence are only the beginning. He outlined plans to further develop the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

As part of this broader strategy, President Muizzu announced that applications for National Service would soon open, offering more Maldivians the opportunity to contribute to the country’s defence.

The event also included the presentation of awards recognizing the fittest MNDF personnel and high-performing units, including those who excelled in the prestigious Pakistan Army Team Spirit competition. A new MNDF ribbon was introduced to promote health and fitness within the ranks.

In a symbolic gesture, President Muizzu personally handed over rifles to newly graduated soldiers, highlighting the continuation of dedication and service within the military.

The ceremony served as a strong reminder of the government’s focus on national unity and its resolve to secure the Maldives through a well-supported and capable defence force.
