The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) is actively monitoring a series of youth-led protests in Malé, sparked by calls for justice in the case of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed.

Yumnu was discovered with severe injuries on April 18 after reportedly falling from the ninth floor of a building in Henveiru, landing on the roof of an adjacent warehouse. She has since been transferred to Malaysia for further treatment.

The Commission stated that its staff are conducting on-site and media monitoring of the demonstrations as part of its mandate to protect and promote human rights during public gatherings. HRCM is also reviewing the actions of the Maldives Police Service during the protests.

Emphasizing the importance of impartiality and transparency, the Commission said its staff have been instructed to avoid any activities that could create conflicts of interest, in line with international standards followed by national human rights institutions.

HRCM said these efforts are essential to uphold the integrity of its work and ensure public confidence in its oversight role.
