Once again Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) raises concerns on lack of sufficient investigation over a statement marking 17 years for the brutal incident which occurred in Maafushi Prison in 2003, where an inmate, Evan Naseem, was beaten to death by prison guards.

Although during its previous administration MDP had established a three-member committee composed of government ministers to carry out the investigation, a proper investigation was not completed.

From the statement MDP said that Evan Naseem died due to injuries he sustained after he was beaten and tortured by prison guards and accused of trying to cover up the incident by trying to bury the body without letting the family know. The statement also highlighted the fatal shooting occurred during the riot which broke out at the prison after Evan Naseem was beaten to death by prison guards.

MDP stated that up to this date there hadn’t been any investigation on how or why the incident occurred and the person or persons who issued the order to open fire on inmates. The open fire incident killed 3 inmates and injured 16 inmates.

MDP also said that this incident brought to light the truth behind the rumors of torture and killing of inmates by Maumoon’s administration to the Maldivian people, as well as the rest of the world. Which forced the government to bring a lot of changes to the political responsibilities of the administration of former president Uz. Maumoon.

MDP’s statement was publicly criticized by many, people raised concerns over the fact that an investigation was not held during MDP’s administration.
