The newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator for the Maldives, Mr. Hao Zhang, officially presented his credentials to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Saturday.
Mr. Zhang was welcomed in a traditional 'Haiykolhu' cultural procession from Republic Square, accompanied by the Drum and Trumpet Band of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
During their meeting, President Muizzu welcomed Mr. Zhang and highlighted the vital role of the UN in supporting national development goals in areas such as health, education, and human development. He emphasized the importance of continued UN engagement in helping the Maldives achieve its target of becoming a fully developed nation by 2040.
The President also expressed interest in close cooperation with the UN on implementing the newly ratified generational tobacco ban and enhancing national mental health initiatives.
The event comes as the Maldives marks 60 years of membership in the United Nations — a milestone reflecting decades of partnership based on shared values of peace, progress, and multilateral cooperation.
