The Prosecutor General’s Office has announced that individuals accused of terrorism and child sexual abuse will not be released under the electronic monitoring tag system.

In a statement issued today, the office said the decision is based on an assessment conducted by the Dhaka Police Service, which evaluates risks associated with releasing individuals in custody or under non-custodial detention.

The prosecutor’s office emphasized that only suspects in cases considered low-risk to public safety may be eligible for release with electronic monitoring. “Remand has not been eased for suspects in child sexual abuse, murder, serious terrorism, or major drug trafficking cases,” the statement read.

So far, two individuals have been released under the tagging system. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has previously pledged to address issues surrounding prolonged detention, while Home Minister Ali Ihusaan has echoed the commitment to find effective solutions.
