President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced a nationwide housing initiative aimed at ensuring every Maldivian aged 18 and above receives their “first home,” whether a house or flat. The project is set to begin this year.

In an interview with Public Service Media (PSM), President Muizzu identified affordable housing as a top priority for his Administration. He said construction would begin within the year in key locations such as Giraavaru Falhu and Gulhifalhu in the Greater Malé Region.

The President said 4,000 flats have been allocated for the Malé area, noting that the initiative would provide significant relief to residents. Eligible applicants are expected to receive written confirmation of their allocation by the end of 2025.

Beyond the capital, similar housing projects will be rolled out in 57 islands, financed either through contractor funding or the state budget.

Addressing past grievances, President Muizzu assured that those who lost homes under previous government schemes would be prioritized, except those already granted housing under other programmes.

He reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to delivering on promises and ensuring every citizen has access to secure and dignified housing.
