Tensions escalated at the United Nations Security Council as Iran accused the United States of being complicit in Israel’s attacks on Iranian territory, a claim Washington strongly denied.
Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani condemned the Israeli strikes as an attempt to derail diplomacy and warned that US support made it “fully responsible” for the consequences. “Those who support this regime, with the United States at the forefront, must understand that they are complicit,” Iravani told the council.
Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon defended the strikes as “an act of national preservation,” accusing Iran of preparing for war and stockpiling material for nuclear weapons. U.S. Representative McCoy Pitt reiterated that while Washington had been informed in advance of Israel’s actions, it had not participated militarily. McCoy Pitt said that the United States will continue to seek a diplomatic resolution that ensures Iran will never acquire a nuclear weapon or pose a threat to stability in the Middle East. He urged Tehran to return to negotiations, saying, “Iran’s leadership would be wise to negotiate at this time.”
Meanwhile, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog confirmed that multiple Iranian nuclear facilities—including Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan—were damaged in the Israeli attacks, as Iran launched retaliatory strikes late Friday. The fate of the upcoming US-Iran nuclear talks in Oman remains uncertain.
