Former Justice Minister Mohamed Muizzu Adnan has said that while it is acceptable to disagree with government policies, such opinions should be expressed within respectful and appropriate limits.
His comments came following an incident during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to N. Kudafari, where a local woman publicly shouted abusive remarks at the President. Muizzu described the incident as “uncivilized” and “absurd,” stating that such behavior should not be tolerated, especially in the presence of the Head of State.
In a post shared on social media, Muizzu emphasized that the office of the President symbolizes the Maldivian state and represents the entire nation, regardless of political affiliations.
“Freedom is not about being uncivilized. Democracy is not about living as you please,” he said.
He noted that while citizens have the right to criticize the government and its policies, it must be done within proper rules and limits. Stressing that there is a time, place, and manner for expressing dissent, Muizzu warned that failing to act against such disrespectful behavior could erode societal values and weaken the country’s social fabric.
